What category of cabin should I get?

Getting a cabin is sort of like getting a car. When you were young and getting your first car, you didn't care whether it was old, had no air conditioning, and had hand-crank windows, just so long as it was a car, and just so long as it ran. As you got older, and could afford better, you got better and better cars. The same thing with cabins on your cruise ship. On your first cruise, you are going to be so over-awed by the ship, you aren't going to care what kind of cabin you have--"just get me on that ship!" After all, you're not going to spend any time in your cabin. You're only going to be in there to sleep and change clothes, so who cares about a more expensive cabin. Save your money to buy something neat from some exotic port. After you've cruised a few times, you'll start to get spoiled, and you'll want an ocean-view stateroom, so you can tell whether it's day or night, and so you can look out. You might also consider an ocean-view stateroom if you have a tendency to get motion discomfort, or claustrophobia. Also, if you are cruising to Alaska or through the Panama Canal, you might consider an ocean-view stateroom, because on those cruises there might actually be something to see. Then as you get older and become even more spoiled, you will want a balcony stateroom. If you can afford it, indulge yourself. After all, you deserve it!
